The Backstreet Art District is one of Palm Springs' most vibrant creative destinations, offering visitors the chance to experience art where it is made. Tucked away at 2600 South Cherokee Way, just south of downtown, the district is home to a collection of artist galleries, working studios, and creative businesses representing painters, sculptors, ceramic artists, photographers, jewelers, and mixed-media artists.
Unlike a traditional gallery, the Backstreet Art District invites visitors behind the scenes. Many artists create their work in studios located just beyond their gallery spaces, making it possible to watch works in progress, ask questions, and learn about each artist's techniques and inspiration. This direct connection between artist and visitor gives the district a welcoming, personal atmosphere that appeals to both serious collectors and casual art lovers.
The district features more than a dozen galleries showcasing a wide range of original artwork, from contemporary paintings and fine art photography to ceramics, glass, jewelry, serigraphs, and abstract mixed-media pieces. Many of the artists are locally based, while others have earned regional, national, and international recognition.
One of the district's signature events is the First Wednesday Art Walk 5-7pm, held year-round on the first Wednesday of each month. During the evening, galleries stay open late, artists greet visitors, new exhibitions debut, and the community gathers to celebrate Palm Springs' thriving arts scene. The event has become a favorite tradition for residents and visitors alike, offering an opportunity to meet artists, enjoy refreshments, and explore multiple galleries in a single evening.
